Where motorisation is actually worth it

We'll be straight about this, because plenty of people spend money on it where they didn't need to.

Worth it: windows you physically can't reach — high, above stairs, behind furniture. Long runs of blinds you'd otherwise operate one at a time twice a day. Very large or heavy blinds and curtains. Homes with small children, where removing the cord is a safety improvement. Anyone with limited mobility.

Usually not worth it: a couple of standard windows in rooms you're in anyway. The novelty fades and the chain was never the problem.

Power options

Battery, solar or hardwired

Battery

A rechargeable lithium motor inside the roller tube. No wiring, so it retrofits to any existing window. Charge every six to twelve months depending on use. The most common choice by a wide margin.

Solar

A small panel on the window feeds the battery, so it effectively never needs charging. Only works on windows getting decent direct sun — which on the Gold Coast is most of them.

Hardwired

Mains power to each blind. Nothing to charge ever, and it's the right answer for very large blinds or curtain tracks that draw more power. Needs to be planned during a build or renovation, since it means running cable.

Simplest. One remote can run individual blinds, groups or every blind in the house.

A fixed control that doesn't get lost down the couch.

Phone control from anywhere, plus scheduling.

Scheduled and automated

Blinds down at sunset, up at 7am, or triggered by a sun sensor. This is where motorisation stops being a novelty.

Bedroom blockouts open gradually at your alarm time. Better than an alarm.

Motorised blinds — common questions

How much does motorisation add?

A few hundred dollars per blind over the manual equivalent, depending on the motor and the size. Doing several at once brings the per-blind cost down because the control gear is shared.

Can existing blinds be motorised?

Sometimes. Retrofit motors exist for many roller systems, but it depends on the tube and the brackets. Send us a photo and we'll tell you whether it's viable or whether you're better off replacing.

What happens in a power cut?

Battery and solar blinds keep working — they're not on mains. Hardwired blinds stop, though most have a manual override.

How long does the battery last?

Six to twelve months for a typical blind operated once or twice a day. Larger and heavier blinds drain faster. Solar effectively removes the question.

Are they noisy?

Quieter than most people expect — a soft hum for a few seconds. Quiet-motor options are available if the blind is in a bedroom and you're sensitive to it.
