Venetian Blinds

Tilt, don't just lift

Every other blind gives you one axis of control — open or closed. A Venetian gives you two.

Tilt the slats and you can bounce light up onto the ceiling while keeping the view out at eye level blocked from the street. That combination — bright room, full privacy — is something no roller or curtain manages. It's why Venetians persist in street-facing rooms, bathrooms and home offices decades after they should have gone out of fashion.

Real timber slats, in stains that show the grain or painted finishes that don't. Warm, substantial, and they read as joinery rather than window hardware — which is why they suit older Queensland homes and anywhere with existing timber.

Often searched as "timber blinds" or "wooden blinds", and worth distinguishing from timber shutters: a Venetian is a blind that raises and lowers on a cord, a shutter is a fixed frame with hinged panels. Venetians cost considerably less. Shutters last longer and add more at resale.

Timber doesn't belong in consistently wet rooms.

Aluminium Venetian blinds

Slim, light and effectively immune to moisture, which makes them the practical answer for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. Slat widths from 25mm up, in a wide colour range including matte and metallic finishes.

Modern aluminium slats are far better than the flimsy ones people remember — thicker, better coated, and they hold their shape.

The narrowest. Neat and unobtrusive, best on small windows.

The most common. Good balance of view when open and coverage when closed.

What's the difference between timber Venetians and timber shutters?

A Venetian is a blind — horizontal slats on a cord that raise, lower and tilt. A shutter is a fixed frame with hinged panels containing louvres. Venetians cost significantly less and suit most rooms. Shutters last longer, look more permanent and add more at resale.

Are Venetian blinds hard to clean?

They collect more dust than a flat blind, which is the honest downside. A slat duster or a vacuum brush attachment handles it in a few minutes. Aluminium can be wiped with a damp cloth; timber should only ever be barely damp.

Can I get them for a bathroom?

Aluminium, yes — it's one of the best options for a wet area. Timber, no. It will eventually swell and warp regardless of the finish.

Do they help with heat?

Somewhat. Tilting the slats to reflect direct sun makes a noticeable difference, though a blockout roller or a lined curtain performs better on heat overall. Venetians win on control, not insulation.
