Timber Shutters
The best-looking shutter you can buy
Timber is the original plantation shutter material and still the one everything else is measured against. Real grain, real weight, and it takes stain and paint in a way composites approximate but never quite match.
It's also the lightest of the three shutter materials, which matters more than it sounds. Lighter panels mean less strain on the hinges, which means a shutter that still swings true and closes flush in fifteen years. On wide panels, timber is the only material we'd use.

Timber shutters or timber blinds?
These get searched interchangeably, and they're different products.
Timber shutters
A fixed frame with hinged panels of adjustable louvres. Permanent, substantial, and treated as a fixture — they stay with the house when it sells.
Timber blinds
Properly, timber Venetian blinds — horizontal slats on a cord that raise, lower and tilt. Much cheaper, easier to retrofit, and they come down when you move.
If you're after the timber look on a budget, Venetians are probably what you want.

Painted, stained or natural
Painted
Full colour range. Satin white is the most-requested and the safest with almost any interior. Painted finishes hide the grain and give a cleaner, more contemporary look.
Stained
Shows the grain. Suits homes with existing timber floors, doors or joinery. We match to a sample where we can.
Natural & clear-sealed
Minimal finish, maximum grain. Works in coastal and Scandinavian interiors.
Louvre sizes
Wider louvres, fewer lines, more view
63mm
Traditional, suits smaller windows and period homes.
89mm
The most popular. Balanced on most window sizes.
114mm
Fewest louvres, most view when open, most contemporary. Best on large windows.
Wider louvres mean fewer horizontal lines across the window, which almost always looks more expensive. On a small window they can overwhelm.
Where it works
Where timber belongs — and where it doesn't
Belongs: living rooms, bedrooms, studies, dining rooms, hallways. Anywhere dry.
Doesn't: bathrooms, laundries, anywhere with sustained moisture, and homes right on the water where salt air is constant. Timber will eventually move in those conditions and no finish fully prevents it.
For wet areas we'd put you in PVC, and for anything outdoors, aluminium. Both are covered on the shutters hub.

Timber shutters — common questions
How much do timber plantation shutters cost on the Gold Coast?
Timber is the most expensive of the three shutter materials. Expect several hundred to well over a thousand dollars per window depending on size, louvre width and configuration. Doing multiple windows at once brings the per-window cost down. The measure and quote is free and itemised.
What's the difference between timber shutters and timber blinds?
Shutters are a permanent hinged frame; blinds are slats on a cord. Shutters cost considerably more, last decades and add value at resale. Timber Venetian blinds give a similar look for much less and can be taken with you.
Will timber shutters warp on the Gold Coast?
Not in a normal indoor environment. In a bathroom, laundry, or a house directly on the water they can, over time. That's what PVC is for — we'll tell you at the measure which rooms need which material.
Can they be made for arched or bay windows?
Yes. Arches, half-rounds, bays and raked windows are standard custom work. Timber's lower weight makes it the easiest material for unusual shapes.
How do I maintain them?
Dust them. That's it. Never wet-clean timber beyond a barely damp cloth, and don't use solvents or polish on a painted finish.
